Before Hilary and Barack there was Shirley!

Shirley Chisholm

Shirley Chisholm (1924 – 2005), an advocate for women and people of color, was the first Black woman in Congress, being elected to Brooklyn’s 12th Congressional District of the House in 1968.  She was the first Black person and one of the first women to run for the presidential nomination from a major party in 1972. Though she didn’t win the nomination, she was always very respected, having been a founding member of the Congressional Black Caucus and the National Organization of Women.  She was a bad woman! Black Face Lives and Black Women are the Targets

Knipp as Ms. Shirley, along with 3 hosts from Bravo’s “Queer Eye for the Straight Guy”

Yeah, that’s Charles Knipp, a big white man in black face playing “Ms. Shirley Q. Liquor,” a character that he created that’s a Black woman with 19 fatherless kids and poor grammar that he uses as a tool to mock Black culture and Black people. Supposedly, this man does drag shows all around the country and the gay community supports and loves him!(Note the 3 hosts from Bravo’s “Queer Eye for the Straight Guy” hamming it up with him in the photo above).

Now, let’s be clear…I’m totally pro First Amendment and believe that he should be able to say and do what he wants…but what I do believe is that it’s also our right to not provide him with a forum and audience.  I would normally not have posted this, but I thought my sisters needed to know that we were being ripped, and hopefully, if you hear that he’s coming to your town, you will make some noise about it.  Be careful, however, because Black Superwoman Jasmyne Cannick spoke out about it and even got some of his shows cancelled in 2007, and she has been receiving death threats! [The Daily Voice]

“Girlfriends” Cancelled!

Original Cast of Girlfriends

“Girlfriends,” which was created by Mara Brock Akil, has been cancelled by the CW and won’t return in the Fall of 2008.  Honestly, it hasn’t been as good since Toni left, but it was still one of the few shows on television that featured Black women…and I watched it every week!  The writers kept it real…every week they touched on topics that actually affect us…and were real about how we deal with them.  I didn’t feel like the characters were just White characters played by Black women…they were really Sistahs.  Honestly, I’m also going to miss watching what Joan had on…her gear, bags and shoes were BAD every week!

“Girlfriends” leaves the air as the longest running live action comedy show currently on television, having 172 episodes in the can.  Both “The Game” and “Everybody Hates Chris” were renewed.  I will truly miss my “Girlfriends”! [E!online]

Boondocks v. BET…It’s a Real Showdown

Check out this clip from the Boondocks that will never make it on Comedy Central…rumor has it that BET put pressure on them to not air it.  I can’t even believe I’m posting it, but it is SO funny that I couldn’t resist!  I totally don’t think that this is how BET is, but I DO think that the community needs to continue to put pressure on them for the negative images of Black people that they portray.  That being said, it really doesn’t matter if we as a people continue to perpetuate these negative stereotypes…it actually makes it more likely that BET as a network will thrive.
I’m not knocking BET…I am definitely of age and feel that I should be able to watch the adult programming they air if I so desire.  If you have issues with BET, try TV One….it’s grown and sexy…and SMART.

Black Superwomen Only Wear This To SLEEP IN!

As far as I know, this sleeping cap is for SLEEPING.  Imagine how astonished I was, when on a trip with a friend to Phili, we saw two Black teen supergirls walking down the street with these on in broad daylight…one in pink and one in black both with the white ruffle!  Then, later on in that same weekend we saw another Black supergirl rockin’ the sleeping cap!

When we got back to DC, my friend saw someone here in the CVS wearing the same sleeping cap with the ruffle.  What in the world?!  Black Superwomen…if you didn’t know, these little caps are NOT CUTE!  I mean, how much more slovenly can you look?  At least put on a head wrap or something!  Save the sleeping cap for NIGHT TIME!

Oldest Cookbook by a Black Superwoman in the United States

“Domestic Cook Book” by Malinda Russell

Jan Longone, the curator of American Culinary History of the library at the University of Michigan Ann Arbor, came across a book entitled “Domestic Cook Book:  Containing a Careful Selection of Useful Recipes for the Kitchen”.  The book was written and self published by Malinda Russell in 1866, and the 39 tattered pages are changing the culinary history of African American people.  Having been convinced that the sole African American cuisine was “soul food”, this book proves that free African Americans were also making “complex cosmopolitan food inspired by European cuisine.” We should have known…we are so dope that there is no way that the culinary standouts in our community back then were only making collard greens and pigs feet!
